Stocks Rise, Greek Bonds Soar on Speculation of German Bailout
By David Merritt
Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks rallied worldwide as the prospect of German aid for Greece drove the nation’s bond yields down the most since the creation of the euro.
The MSCI World Index of 23 developed nations’ stocks rose 0.6 percent at 10:21 a.m. in London. Greece’s ASE Index surged 4 percent, recording its biggest two-day advance in 15 months. The yield on the Greek 10-year note fell as much as 55 basis points, the most since at least 1998. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 0.4 percent after the benchmark index climbed 1.3 percent yesterday. Oil slipped as U.S. stockpiles increased.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said aid to Greece may extend beyond guaranteeing loans, according to an official who attended a briefing for lawmakers on the eve of a European Union summit that will be dominated by economic issues. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke will present testimony later today on the withdrawal of stimulus measures as the U.S. economy rebounds.
“Reassurance has arrived,” said Philipp Musil, a fund manager at Constantia Privatbank AG in Vienna, who helps oversee about $13 billion. “A comment from a decision maker has long been awaited to show that Greece will not be left alone.”
Greek bonds have lost more value than any other government debt this year on concern Prime Minister George Papandreou will fail to cut the largest budget deficit in the EU. Labor unions are striking today, closing schools, hospital and airports, in protest at planned austerity measures.
